week of April 30 - May 4, 2012
Happenings for the week of April 30 – May 4, 2012
Next week in Phonics we will be learning the two sounds of digraph th as in thimble and feather. We will review all of the letters and their sounds and the digraphs we have covered (ck and sh). Digraphs are two letters that come together to make one sound. We will not have Show and Tell.
In Reading we will read the story “Old MacDonald Had a Woodshop”. Our focus skill will be compare and contrast.
In Math, we will be acting out and drawing stories involving “some” and “some more” and solving a problem by guessing and checking. We will identify a cone and sort three-dimensional objects. (cone, cylinder, cube, and sphere) Students will continue to practice counting from 0-20 and identifying numbers 11-30, and we will be identifying the time of day as day or night, and morning, afternoon, or evening. We will be counting by 2’s and learning about even and odd numbers, as well as acting out story problems for subtraction.
The end of the school year is quickly approaching. We will be soon having our end of the year testing for kindergarten. Each child will be tested by the Reading teachers. Children will need to write a dictated sentence, recognize, write, and give the sound of every letter of the alphabet, be fluent in phonemic segmentation( Identify the different sounds that make up words), be able to provide a word that begins with every letter of the alphabet, and be able to use a word in a sentence. Please try at home to work on some of the areas to be tested to ensure that your child is fully prepared.
Field trip permission slips will be sent home shortly in your child’s folder. Please complete, sign, and return the permission slip form as soon as possible. Kindergarten will be traveling to The Ringling Brothers Circus on May 24th in Hershey.**Just a reminder: Students will need to wear the North Schuylkill T-shirts that was provided by the PTO on the field trip—so be sure you have it ready. Please also note that chaperones that were chosen to go on the field trip were active members of the PTO and have their clearances on file as required.
Monday, April 30 will be day 1 in our five day cycle. We will have library class.
Please note that it can be very cool in our classroom. You may want to send in a sweater or jacket with your child even though it may be very warm outside.
