Week of January 4 - 8, 2016

Welcome back! Happy New Year!

Following is the tentative homework for this week. So far, we have a mild winter with no snow in the forecast, so hopefully we can get through the next few weeks with no delays or cancellations!

Math - We are starting topic 8. We will be continuing practicing multiplication. We will begin to learn how to multiply 2 digit by 2 digit numbers. We will first use arrays to help us. Homework is as follows depending on how well everyone catches on: Monday - P8-1, Tuesday - P8-2, Wednesday- P8-3, Thursday- P 8-4, and Friday P8-5 ( hopefully we will finish that in class).

Reading - We are starting the story "How Night Came from the Sea" in unit 3. this is a myth that comes from Brazil. It was told as an early explanation of why we have night and day each 24 hours. The skill this week is generalization. A generalization is a broad statement that is made about something. These statements include clue words such as all, most, always. usually, or generally. Some examples are : "Along the equator, the length of daylight is always the same."or "When we say day, we often mean daytime, when it is light out." Statements that are generalizations can be valid or faulty ( meaning true or false). We will practice identifying generalizations in our readings. The vocab for this week is : brilliant, chorus, coward, gleamed, and shimmering. Please study the words each evening. Most likely the test on this story will be on Friday.

Grammar- Our lesson this week will be subject-verb agreement. This means that the subject and the verb in a sentence must work together. In most cases if you have a singular subject, the verb will end is -s or -es. For example "The ant drags the crumb through the grass." If a subject is plural,, then in most cases the verb will no end in s or es. example : "The ants drag the crumbs through the grass." We will practice this in class this week, but please review at home using the family times suggestions.

Spelling- Our list this week is on words with the vowel sound as in "shout". Our pretest will be Tuesday. Tuesday's homework will be to make corrections, Wednesday and Thursday's homework will be the abc order and the word search. Post test will be Friday.

Science- we are working on the following this week in science: ecosystems, populations, communities, food webs, food chains, producers, consumers, decomposers, and the affects that people have on ecosystems.
