Week of March 16 - 20, 2015

Early welcome to spring as we wait for its arrival later this week!


Reading- We are starting a new story Monday called "Paul Bunyan". The genre is a tall tale. We will be discussing figurative language such as hyperbole ( exaggeration), alliteration ( repetition of sounds), onomatopoeia ( words that when pronounced sound like the actual meaning), simile, metaphors, and personification. We will also be reviewing generalizations and looking at how suffixes and prefixes can help us determine meanings of unknown words. The vocabulary for this week as as follows: announcement, feature, harness, lumberjacks, requirements, thaw, unnatural, and untamed. Homework for the week will most likely be as follows:

Monday - complete workbook page 224 on the vocabulary words
Tuesday- write a short story using the vocabulary words in your reading notebooks
Wednesday - complete workbook page 229 on reading a schedule
Thursday- Finish questions on story "Paul Bunyan" ( questions at the end of the story)
Friday - test on Paul Bunyan??? ( may be Friday or next Monday)


Grammar- Monday - Mrs. Reinoehl's class is starting the study of irregular verbs. Irregular verbs are verbs that change to other words to show past tense. For example the verb make becomes made in past tense. Mrs. Nestor's class will be reviewing tense of verbs and having a quiz on TUESDAY. Mrs. Reinoehl's class will complete workbook p. 232 for homework.

Tuesday- Mrs. Nestor's class will have a quiz today on tense of verbs. Mrs. Reinoehl's class will complete workbook page 242 for homework.

Wednesday - Mrs. Nestor's class will start irregular verbs and will have workbook p. 232 for homework. Mrs. Reinoehl's class will review and have a quiz on irregular verbs on Thursday.

Thursday- Quiz today for Mrs. Reinoehl's class on irregular verbs.
Mrs. Nestor's class will complete workbook p. 242 for homework.

Friday - No grammar homework for Mrs. Reinoehl's
Mrs. Nestor's class will need to study irregular verbs over the weekend for a short quiz on MOnday.


Spelling - We have had our pretest on contractions on Friday. The post test on those words will be Wednesday. The list is : don't, won't, wouldn't, there's, we're, you're, doesn't, I've, here's, wasn't, shouldn't, couldn't, where's, hadn't, aren't, they're, it's, we've, when's, and haven't.


Science- Mrs. Reinoehl's class will be finishing up chapter 4 this week by working through lessons 5 and 6 on fossils. We will have a quiz possibly on Friday on this information so make sure you look at the daily assignment book.
Mrs. Nestor's class will be finished up lessons 3 and 4 and having a vocab quiz on Wednesday. The vocabulary that you need to know are as follows: consumer, producer, decomposer, food chain, food web, solar energy, predator, prey. You will also need to be able to identify living things as either producers ( which are all plants), decomposers ( mushrooms, worms), and consumers ( animals, people, many insects).
