Week of September 14 - 18, 2015

Tentative homework for the week is as follows:

Spelling - We will have a pretest Tuesday. The rest of the week study the words for the post test on Friday. The words for list 2 are as follows: sigh, right, weigh, eight, detail, height, spray, braid, bait, grain, slight, thigh, tight, raisin, trait, highway, frighten, dismay, freight, and sleigh.

Please note that we will always have a pretest the first day of a new reading story as reading, grammar, and spelling are designed to be taught together.

Written work practicing the words is completed during our intervention time block where the students work on various activities such as a word search, writing the words three times each, putting the words in ABC order, and filling in what we call "sailboat" spelling worksheet. Each completed sheet is worth a bonus point on the test. Students can take home any unfinished papers the night before the post test to finish so that they are eligible for the extra points.

Grammar- This week we will be working on types of sentences again. We will be focusing on imperative and exclamatory sentences. Imperative sentences are command sentences and end with a period. Exclamatory sentences are sentences that show strong feeling or surprise and end with an exclamation point (!). Examples are: Imperative- Put your name at the top of your paper. Exclamatory- That show was amazing! Homework for the week will be to study and to finish any work that is not completed during intervention times. The quiz on this will be Thursday of this week.

Reading- We are starting a new story "Lewis and Clark and Me". The story is based on the explorations of Lewis and Clark but told from the perspective of their dog Seaman. The focus skill this week is "author's purpose". The author's purpose can be to entertain, inform, persuade, or express ideas and feelings ( or sometimes a combination). Knowing the author's purpose of a story or text can help a reader know how to focus on the text or story. We will also talk about the main idea and details of a story this week. The main idea is basically a sentence that tells the point that the story is trying to make or basically the main idea. The supporting details give information about that idea that "supports" it.
This concept can be difficult so we will continue to work on this throughout the year.

The vocabulary words for this week are: docks, migrating, scan, scent, wharf, and yearned. We also will talk about other words we call "amazing words". These words are NOT tested but just expose students to words that are included in the story and will help expand their vocabulary.

The test on the skills and vocabulary for this story will be on Friday. Last week's test will be coming home this Friday for you to review. You can also review the test score on www.pearsonsuccessnet.com by using the student username and password sent home in the Friday folder.

Science- We are continuing Chapter 1, we will move on to the second lesson. There will not be any homework .

Social Studies- We will be focusing on map skills this week. Social studies will be every Friday. The project paper should be signed and returned. The papers sent home with that paper need to be completed by Oct. 16. We will complete a different part of the project in school.

Math - We are continuing topic 2. Homework for tonight is practice sheet 2-5. A test is scheduled for Thursday on topic 2. Also, continue to review the 3 times tables.
