Homework for this week:
Spelling: We will have another pretest on Tuesday. The list goes with the story "Paul Bunyan" and is composed of possessives. The list is a follows: its, ours, mine, yours, hers, theirs, family's, families', man's, men's, girl's, girls', brother's, brothers', teacher's, teachers', aunt's, aunts', boy's, boys'. the challenge words are: country's, countries', witness's, witnesses', laboratory's, laboratories'. Since many did not do well on the first pretest, we are going to redo it on Tuesday.
Grammar- We will be working on past, present, and future tense of verbs. The tense of verbs tells when an action happens. A verb in present tense tells about an action that is happening now. A verb in the past tense tells about action that has already happened. Many past tense verbs end in -ed. A verb in the future tense tells about the action that will happen in the future. The helping verb will is added to a verb to form the future tense. HOmework for Monday will be workbook page 221. Tuesday's homework will be workbook p. 240. Wednesday's homework will be to study. A quiz on this will be Thursday.
We will also be writing a myth explaining something in nature. Students will be assigned to write the myth and have it completed by the end of the week.
Reading - Mrs. Nestor's class will have a test on "How Night Came from the Sea" on Tuesday. They will need to study the following vocabulary words: brilliant, chorus, coward, gleamed, and shimmering. They also need to know what a generalization is and how to identify one by looking for clue words such as : always, never, often, generally, sometimes, usually, most, and none. A generalization is a statement that applies to a group and may or may not be true (valid). Mrs. Reinoehl's class is starting the story "The Eye of the Storm". The skill for this story is to identify the cause and effect of events in a story. This story is a true account of Hurricane Andrew as told from a reporter who stayed to photograph the storm. Vocabulary words for this story are: destruction, expected, forecasts, inland, shatter, and surge. Homework for Monday will be workbook p. 213 and p.217. Tuesday's homework will be to write a business letter asking for aid after a hurricane using the vocab words. Homework for the remainder of the week is yet to be determined so make sure it is written down in the assignment books.
Science- This week we will be focusing on food chains and food webs. We will cover lesson 3 in chapter 4 and create our own example food chains and webs. We will have a quiz on lessons 2- 3 on Thursday. Be sure to know the following terms: omnivore, carnivore, herbivore, producer, consumer, decomposer, food web, food chain, energy pyramid.
